Secure You Laptop with a Little Laptop Education

Have you become complacent about your most personal information? You are probably going to say no way, but if you have a laptop that you carry around with you, and you are not protecting it in some way, then you are likely risking some very valuable, very easily accessible information. With just a little laptop education, you can reduce your chance of having to deal with the repercussions of having a laptop stolen. Here are some laptop educational tips to help you.

Set up a personal firewall on your laptop. By employing a third-party firewall to thwart hackers from gaining access to your laptop, and maybe into the company network, you can save yourself from thousands of people who are constantly and desperately trying to get to your information. You may need to disable it from time to time in order to download or access certain things, but if you do, make sure you do not forget to turn your firewall back on.

Do you know what biometrics are? It is basically a lock on your machine, but what’s the key? The key is your fingerprint.  If your laptop has this capability, get acquainted with it and use it. This way, your fingerprint can be your logon identification instead of a password.

Tracking software is another option. There are companies that offer tracking software, and with them, your machine regularly pings into a tracking center with a signal. Essentially, your laptop is being traced. This way, if your laptop is stolen, the tracking company will work with law enforcement to find your laptop.

Never forget, there is no safe place for your machine. It is not safe lying around anywhere. Would you leave a wad of cash on a table at a coffee shop and walk away? Probably not, so don’t do it with your most valuable machine. Business conferences of any kind are key targets for thieves. They know that the attendees often have their guards down and will leave laptops laying around. This false sense of security is a banquet that thieves can feast on.

Sure, a laptop case can look cool and chic, but nothing sends a signal to thieves like a showy laptop display. Things like company logos, elite luggage tags, and embossed business cards give thieves indications as to the valuable contents of the bag. Instead, opt for a plain backpack with  padding to securely hold your laptop. In you want to go the extra mile, buy little padlocks and lock up the zippers. This way no one can quickly get into the backpack, steal your machine, zip it up and take off. Even the smallest deterrent can go a long way.

Never underestimate how valuable you laptop is. It is easy to get nonchalant with something that you have with you all the time, I know I have, but with laptop education, you can really protect yourself and save yourself from a world of hurt if your laptop were to get stolen.
